The "Little Things" Of College

"Enjoy the little things in life." This is a phrase we hear every now and again, and although it's cliché, it's incredibly true. We have the ability to find joy in the most seemingly insignificant things, but if it brings us joy, why the heck not pay attention to them and savor them? The "little things" we experience in college are quite different from the little things the average teenager or adult experiences, though. Here are some little joys we students love, but need to acknowledge more.

1. Seeing a dog on campus.

2. Finding a new Netflix series to be obsessed with.

3. Not bombing that test that you were sure you bombed.

4. Free food.

5. Bonding with drunk girls in the bathrooms at bars.

6. Extra credit opportunities.

7. Wine that isn't Barefoot or bagged.

8. Having more than $50 in your checking account at any given time.

9. The elevator in your dorm arriving the moment you push the button.

10. Finally finishing the load(s) of laundry that you've been procrastinating on for a week too long.

11. Having clean underwear again once you finish that laundry.

12. When "Sweet Caroline" comes on at a party and everyone scream-sings along.

13. Coffee being the highlight of Monday mornings.

14. Care packages from parents.

15. A stocked mini fridge.

16. Getting that email that class is cancelled.

17. Those nights in with close friends that are so much better than nights spent at bars.

18. When someone holds the door for you so you don't have to swipe your ID to get into your building.

19. Being asked on a real date.

20. A long conversation with your family, however far away they are.

21. Figuring out something you've never done before and feeling like you're adult-ing.

22. Going a whole month or two without getting sick.

23. Finishing all your homework and not having any responsibilities.

24. A clean dorm room.

25. One word: naps.

26. A good parking spot on campus (or a parking spot in general).

27. Realizing you live only a short walk away from all your friends.

28. Exploring new parts of your college town.

29. Not being hungover Sunday morning.

30. Finishing a speech or research paper and closing all your tabs one at a time.

31. When class lets out early.

32. Feeling pretty (bonus points if you're in the outfit you rolled out of bed and went to class in).

33. Good wifi.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
