To My Little Sister As You Start High School

A letter to my best friend on how to survive high school without me there.

To My Little Sister As You Start High School

Dear My Little Nugget,

First off, thank you. Thank you for the constant love and happiness that you give to me. Ever since the Christmas Eve that I found out mommy was going to have another baby, I knew that my life was going to be changed in the best way. But, I never could have imagined a bond this strong. I will forever cherish our nights watching Netflix in my bed and our afternoon car rides when we sang our hearts out to Fire & Gold. You are my best friend, my cuddle buddy, and my loyalist supporter.

Secondly, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for having to leave you as you start a new (and somewhat scary) chapter in your life. I’m sorry that our five year age difference doesn't allow me to be home for your high school years. I’m sorry in advance for all the times that I won’t be there when all you need is a hug from big sis. I know that you are currently pushing me away because you are scared for me to leave again, but I hope that this letter will help.

I want you to know that I am only one phone call or FaceTime away if you ever need to speak to me. Whether it is a test you are stressed out about, being nervous about your new cheer routine, or being super excited about your first high school boyfriend, please call me. And, if everything seems to be going wrong and you need me there, just know that I will hop in my car and be there before you can shed a tear. Just because I am moving out does not mean that I am not there for you all of the time.

I want to give you a couple words of advice as you begin high school: Always do your homework (it's an easy grade booster). Beware of the loud noise that the soda machine will make on unsuspecting freshman. Cheer your heart out during the football games under the Friday night lights. Be inclusive (no one likes cliques). Make new friends, but keep the old. Use your planner so you stay on top of assignments. Try not to eat too many cookies or pizza in the cafeteria (even though they are delicious, I know). This next one is important: don’t spend all of your time on the boys!!

The most important thing that I can tell you is to remind yourself to enjoy it. Don’t sweat the little things. High school is a wonderful time, and although it will have some ups and downs, I know without a doubt that you will not only do fine but thrive.

My best friend recently told me, “Whoever said ‘leaving your family for college the second time is easier’ lied.” I totally agree. It is never easy leaving you. So as I go back to college, I hope you know how much you mean to me and that nothing will ever change that. Now, go kick some high school booty!!

Love you forever,

Big Sissy

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
