But no matter what, you have me.

Dear Little Sister,

I have held you in high esteem from the moment I first laid my eyes on you. You were so small, so fragile. They had you hooked up to all sorts of monitors and machines, but they didn't bother me a bit. My little NICU sister was always beautiful to me.

As you grew, I only loved you more. I remember when you first started coming to visit me, you could only sit up. I thought those times were difficult, but then you started to run around! After that, you were talking! Now I know what a pill you can truly be, but that has never bothered me.

I have high hopes for you, sister. You're going to be three soon, and then it's on to 13.

We share the same father and so I know how you will feel. Things are going to be harder because he is not around like he should be. You'll sometimes wonder if his mistakes have anything to do with you. You'll sometimes resent him. Sometimes, you'll love him too much. He'll always be in the back of your mind, and that's okay, but try to not let his decisions affect you.

I want you to think about him when you're making every decision, so that life does not lead you down the path it led him. I want you to be stronger than he is, and I know you will be.

I hope that you do not have your feelings hurt when he does not show up for birthdays and holidays. Know that it's okay to be mad, but also remember that he does love you, it's just hard for him sometimes. Try and be understanding. When you forgive him, it becomes easier to forgive everyone else.

Love with your whole heart, sissy. Sometimes it is easier to be reserved, but you'll find that in reservation there is solitude, and loneliness is the worst feeling behind regret.

Be thankful for those who help you as you grow up. You can be anything you want because you have an amazing support system. I believe in you, but I'm far from the only person who does.

Never lose your childlike wonder. You have a great imagination and I hope it stays with you forever. No one likes a boring person, and you're far from boring.

Most importantly, sister, always remember that no matter what you do or who you become, you have me.

I love you,
Your Older Sister

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
