To My Little Sister Starting High School
Olivia Swickard

Dear little sister starting high school this year,

You are about to start the next four years of your life that you will never get to take back so here’s a little advice from you older sister who’s made it through and now is in college:

Be a little nicer than the rest.

Kids are so mean in high school. I am mean cruel. They will pick on others for no reason, they will bully to no end, they will make sure some of their peers will have the worst times of their lives. But you little sister, please just be a little nicer than the rest. Become friends with that one student that everyone excludes. Say hi to the student you sit next to in class that you have never seen before. Sit by the lonely student at lunch who you’ve noticed doesn’t always have someone to sit next to. Just be a little nicer. You being kind can go a long way. I mean it. Being nice is never a crime and it is something that you will be able to take with you for the rest of your life. You can be the stronger, better person in every situation and you will feel great about it.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Do not be afraid to ask a teacher to explain something different. You may get looks but I would rather see you pass with a good grade. Though you never may know that there might be someone who was asking the same question but was to afraid to ask. I kid you not, I wish I had asked more questions in high school. It would of made my life easier. never let the rest of the class be the reason you don't ask something.

ALWAYS stand up for what you believe is right.

Never let someone tell you what you believe is right is wrong. Always stand up for what you believe in because you never know when it will come in handy. This might be the hardest thing you might do, but in the long run, you will be at your best and know that someone will thank you. Doing what is right is not always easy, but know that they can turn out to be the best memories you ever make in your life.

Don’t be scared of high school.

I get that your going to be super nervous but do not be scared. High school will not be as scary as you make it out to be. There will be many teachers that may not be there as you thought they would but there might be that one teacher that you will love and will always push you to do your best. Appreciate that teacher cause they will make high school less scary. High school is a place full of good and bad memories in your life. People will help you though every year. Think of it now, once those four years are up, you can either move on to another four years or you can start you life. Those four years you will never get back though.

Do your best in every class.

You might absolutely hate a class but does not give you any excuse to slack off. You might strongly dislike a teacher, still do not just let it go. Because if you choice to go to college, than you want to have the best grades that you can get. Prove to yourself that no matter what you can get the best grades that you can get. Plus you never know, better grades means a scholarship if do you end up going to college. Your not going to be perfect in every class, but trying your best is the most important thing.

But no matter what I want you to promise that you will do your very best in high school. Make tons of friends. Join clubs. Do your best. Be nice to someone. Befriend someone you never thought you would become friends with before. Learn to be yourself, no matter how hard it may be. Trust yourself and trust those you become friends with. High school may be hard at times, but you will make it through. I believe in you. And I will always be a call away.

Love your older sister who made it through high school.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

Amidst my hectic college career, I always find time for one thing, even on the busiest weeks: Parks and Recreation. This show has made me laugh and has made me cry, but most of all I have related to this show more than I would like to admit.
