I believe all sister relationships are special and unique, and my relationship with my little sister doesn't disappoint. Growing up, we never really fought (which I know is odd for siblings especially sisters), and we have continued to grow closer as we grow older. It’s funny how similar and different we can be at the same time, but I can honestly say that my little sister is both my best friend and role model. Here’s how you know that yours is too:

1. You know what she is doing even if you are miles apart.

Even though she is off at a different college, you still keep track of her schedule, and you always have an idea of when she is in class, working/volunteering or studying. This helps you know when it is a good time to text/call her and when it is not!

2. Little things every day remind you of her.

While living out your day-to-day life, you see things around campus or at work that remind you of her. For me, walking through any of the medical or science buildings reminds me of my sister who is studying to be a nurse. It may be seeing an event that she would like or spotting food from her favorite restaurant that reminds you of her at random times throughout the day.

3. You always bring her up in conversation with your friends.

Most of your friends have met your sister by now, but some of your college friends that didn’t grow up with you still haven’t. Regardless, you always bring up your sister in conversations because there is always something that relates to her. It has gotten so common that when you are talking to one of your friends, you refer to your sister by her name or nickname, and you expect them to know who you are talking about without using the words “my sister.”

4. She is the first person you tell things to.

If you are thinking about sharing the thoughts for your future that don’t quite make sense yet to someone, it will most likely be her. She is your go-to person when you need to talk things through. She will always be there to listen and give good advice.

5. Her idea of fun is the same as yours.

You find that even though you may be very different people with different strengths and talents, the way you do and think through things is very similar. She understands why you're drawn to certain habits or activities over others better than anyone else can. Also, she’s the one person you go to certain places or play certain games with since she is the only person that appreciates them as much as you do. Spending time together is always time well spent.

6. She inspires you.

Even though you are the older sister, oftentimes you feel like you are the one looking up to her. You are the one learning and taking advice from her. Her accomplishments and dreams inspire you in your own life.

7. You are her biggest cheerleader, and she is yours.

You will always support her, and she will always support you, it is as simple as that.

I am so proud of you, little sis, and I can’t wait to cheer you on as you continue to be exactly who God made you to be. Keep doing good for Him and for others, and know that I am always there for you.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
