Little Joy sounds like they probably started when Fabrizio Moretti, Rodrigo Amarante, and Binki Shapiro decided to jam at Devendra Banhart’s pad, and just never decided to leave.
The three band members most likely spend their afternoons singing along to a jukebox packed with Brazilian bossa nova, Julie London ballads, and the Velvet Underground’s Loaded.
Although Little Joy won’t probably stop or change your life, it’s incredibly listenable and a sweet record that is consistently enjoyable. “Brand New Start” attempts to mix things up by incorporating some synth pop, but ultimately falls short as it doesn’t flow with the rest of the album. “Play the Part” places Shapiro’s drowsy sepulchral voice front and center, and I have yet to decide if that was pure genius or simply an unfortunate mistake. If people should download one song off the album I’d suggest it be “Evaporar,” the only track entirely in Portuguese on the record because although the meaning may be unclear, it resembles a type of purity not found in most music now at days with its soothing ukulele layered with Fabrizio Moretti’s voice. The guitars, bass, and drums are stripped from the track, leaving it with only the innocence of the chords and rhythm.
Overall, the greatest aspect about Little Joy is that if you were taking a road trip, and you were searching for a Stroke’s album, but you happened to stumble upon Little Joy’s album first, you would still be okay with it. After the road trip has ended, you may even say, “Now, that is a perfect road trip record!”
