Two years ago, I did one of the most famous walks and received my high school diploma. At the end of the night, one of the thoughts that seemingly invaded my mind was: My little brother is going to be doing this in two short years.
Now two years later, here we are at the end of another school year. My brother has finished his college search and has his career path chosen. They really weren't kidding when they said time does fly.
I miss the days when the three of us would all play Nintendo 64 together. I miss when we would ride our bikes in the alley, taking the same path over and over again but never getting bored. I miss finding free scary movies on On Demand and fighting over which one we were going to watch. I miss you stealing my Barbie and Bratz dolls from me, and I’m sorry I’m telling the world about it now.
I hope you remember those old days while you take this next step in your life. I hope you remember the roots that made you into the wonderful man you are today: a wonderful brother, son, grandson, nephew, cousin, boyfriend, friend.
I hope you work hard in school, and put more than enough effort into everything you do. I hope you find as good of friends as I have found; friends that are constantly by your side and push you to be a better person.
I hope you don't take life too seriously. Though I know you will begin to realize this throughout the years to come, you are bound to make mistakes, that's a universal truth. But, you will learn and benefit from them, I promise.
I hope you take in and really enjoy these last few weeks of high school. They say the four years of high school are the best years of your life, and obviously that is highly incorrect. You won't miss high school. You won't miss being cramped in a building for over 7 hours. You won't miss the teachers constantly nagging you.
What you will miss is the people you talk, laugh, and joke with every day. You'll miss constantly being surrounded by your friends. When it comes to college, chances of you knowing every single person you walk past are low; you may miss this from high school to. You'll miss that connective feeling you get with other students; you know, when you're taking a really hard test and you just kind of know every other student in the classroom is thinking the same thing: Did we even learn anything on this test?!
I have always viewed each passing school year as a barrier you are trying to tear down. From the months of August to June, you work your hardest on tearing down each barrier. Finally, when you get to the end of one, you have a short break until there is another barrier in your way. This cycle continues, until the last barrier is shattered. This is where you are: You're almost done tearing down the barrier. But this time, you'll have steps to take to bring you to another level; a more difficult barrier to break down, but a much more rewarding one at the same time.
There’s no real need to mention that I am proud of you for all that you have accomplished and the goals you have set yourself, because you already know that.
There is also no real need to mention that you can call me anytime you need anything, since I will be blowing up your phone to check on you on the daily anyway- you will have no choice but to talk to your sissy.
