To My Little Brother: Thank You
Christi Copes

To my little brother,

With the imminent arrival of your first year of college looming in the distance, I wanted to take some time to thank you for being the best brother to me. I am consistently blown away by you and your heart. You put other people first in a way that is incredibly rare. I may be the oldest sibling, but you're the one worth looking up to. You see the world for what it is and always do the right thing. You were the best sibling I could have asked for from the very start. I picked fights, and you defused them. I came up with wild plans, and you went along with them even though you knew we would get in trouble. Thank you for knowing when to fight me and when to support me. Thank you for encouraging me and entertaining me.

Thank you for sharing your world with me. You've never shut me out, you've always been willing to make room for me in your life, and you have the most giving spirit. Thank you for letting me grow with you. Thank you for sometimes being the big one, but always letting me take control when I need to. You have been the perfect sibling, and everyone who knows us tells me how lucky I am to have you. You’ve taught me more than anyone else how to love. Your example has been a blessing in my life.

Thank you for always letting me sit in the front seat and for not turning Taylor Swift off when you get in my car. Thank you for indulging my whims, watching my shows and laughing at my bad jokes. You willingly come into my world and participate in the things I care about to spend time with me, and not everyone has a sibling willing to do that for them. You have taught me what it means to be a good friend. You're so selfless in all that you do.

I wouldn’t have wanted to grow up with anyone else. You got stuck with me as your sister, but you’ve always let me be your friend and I’m so grateful. So thank you for the eighteen years of friendship you've given me. I'm so excited to watch you go into the world and make it your own.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
