Fall is hurtling towards us at a blistering pace.
And I don't know about anyone else, but I'm super ready for it.
I went to the mall hoping to find some great knit, fall sweaters, but instead I was confronted with an array of unfamiliar fashion. For those of us who struggle to keep up with the trends, I've gone ahead and distilled this fall's looks into a few basics.
For starters, there's the denim on denim craze.
Reminiscent of the '90s (or perhaps directly descended from?), the denim on denim look can be difficult to pull off. While the celebrities might be rocking outfits in the same shade, I'd recommend having layers with different washes. It gives a more laid-back feel.
Next, we've got scarves.
Don't worry. Infinity scarves are still in. You don't have to get rid of your hoard quite yet. However, the newer scarf look favors big, plaid scarves with ragged edges. Tie them loose to achieve maximum scarf-ness.
And here we have glasses! (Oh and look! Denim!)
If your first thought was, "Harry Potter much?" you're not alone. Round glasses, clear frames, and wire frames are very popular this fall -but that doesn't mean they're for everyone. Not all glasses frames are flattering to every face shape. Round frames suit square and oval faces best, but if you're really in love, try a pair on and see what you think, regardless of your face shape.
Last year you might have started seeing the over-the-knee boot.
Well, this year you will continue to see the over-the-knee-boot. The look caught on, so a lot more stores are carrying them this fall. Most come in suede, but you can also find them in leather/pleather if you're so inclined. They can be worn over boots, thigh-high socks, tights or just by themselves.
They're particularly popular worn in tandem with sweater or shirt dresses.
Most shirt dresses right now are plaid flannel or denim, but you can find some in florals and solids too. You can wear them with or without leggings, so they're a super-easy basic to have in your wardrobe.
Let's also take a moment to notice this girl's hat and necklace. Those hats are in for whatever reason. I'm not a huge fan, but you can find them almost anywhere right now. Be warned. Most people don't look good in hats, but if you're one of the rare few, go ahead and wear one!
Her necklace is playing off the long-layered look as well as chokers. Like denim, chokers are a resurrected trend from the '90s. They're a fun statement, but when you need to be a little dressier, the wrap around necklace is a nice replacement. As shown above, it gives you the look of a choker and the length of a necklace. It also has the potential to strangle you if you get it snagged on anything, so proceed with caution.
Have fun trying out these new trends!
