Little Annoyances

These are just the little things that annoy me, personally, and I mean no harm by voicing them.

Yesterday, my friend brought up a list on her phone of, in her words, "Things that piss her off." It was a humorous list of arbitrary things that annoy her, such as the way that our school cheerleaders jump or the fact that there are no good boiled peanuts in Orlando. It got me thinking about pet peeves-- the little things that like to get us down. I thought about the little things that make my blood curdle. Nothing major or life-changing, just those little things that, in the moment, seem like the biggest deal in the world and I decided I'd share them with you.

The little thing that makes me the most angry is people talking in class. Not just normal talking, but the kind of talking where you're trying not to get caught talking. You know the kind I'm talking about: overly loud whispers, stifled laughter that is turned into a cough, and the giggling that sneaks out when it fails. It's so irritating! If you want to talk, just do it outside of class, please. I'm trying to learn here. Speaking of learning, another thing that annoys me is when people continually pronounce things incorrectly. Now, I get that some people have accents or speech impediments and cannot physically say things correctly. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the people who speak proper English, except for a few words. Like espresso, or library, or Appalachian. (Which is pronounced App-uh-latch-in, thank you very much.) If you learn to say things correctly, you'll sound a lot smarter. When you sound a lot smarter, you get more jobs. When you get more jobs, you get more money. Say things correctly so that you make more money.

Another thing that makes me mad is the fact that it's nearly December and I'm still sweating my butt off walking to class. Granted, this is just a Florida problem (and maybe Southern California), but it's still ridiculous. Today is November 30th and it's 85 degrees. Come on, weather, really? I'm not in a very Christmas-y mood when I'm still wearing shorts and sandals. Another Florida-only (and probably also Southern California) thing that annoys me is the fact that we haven't had rain in weeks. I love the rain, personally, and it has a tendency to cool down the area, which we desperately need. Rain rain, don't go away. Come and save us from this miserably hot day. (Please.)

You know what else makes me mad? Football season is over. I love football, even though our team isn't the best. (They're improving, guys!) Games are so much fun to go to, and the actual sport is really entertaining to me. But, alas, I have to wait a whole year to watch my Knights take the field again. Sigh. On another football note, it annoys me that to be on the dance team you have to be half-naked. Basically. Their uniforms are sparkly sports bras and tight-fitting pants-- aka, not for me. I'd love to audition for the dance team, but trust me, I would not look good in that getup.

What else annoys me? Ah, yes, people who play their music out loud in public. Currently I am sitting in the library typing this article and someone is playing their girl ballads very loudly across the way. Around campus, people often carry speakers in their backpack and play it as they're walking or biking or skating or whatever. Please, get headphones. I don't want to hear your Kanye or Miley or whatever you happen to be listening to at the moment. Oh, and if you do have headphones, turn it down. I don't want to hear your music then, either. Also, you might go deaf.

I seem like an extremely bitter and judgmental person based on this article, but I promise it's all in good fun. These are just the little things that annoy me, personally, and I mean no harm by voicing them. As long as you're doing what makes you happy without interfering with other people's lives, by all means, do it. Don't worry about what other people think of you or whether or not you're making them mad. As long as you're clearly not harming them or causing a disruption to their day, you do you. But remember, you might be next on someone's list of things that piss them off.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
