A Little Advice On High School

High school. The "best four years of your life", the big school, freedom, a huge step. You're scared and anxious, going over in your mind every possible thing that could go wrong on the first day. Most likely picturing high school to be what you see on every t.v. show that focuses on it. A huge campus, loaded with different types of people and zoned in to all the drama that occurs. Bullies, cliques, heartbreak. Or maybe you think of it like high school musical. Singing, dancing in unison, a disney type place where everyone falls in love and is just so good it deserves a second and third time to do it all over again.

Well, high school is none of this, at all.

It's neither terrible nor the best experience, but it is a perfectly normal life in which you can handle. Do not let any show or movie intimidate you because just like any other school you've been to, you will eventually ease into your eality. Of course it's scary on the first day, you're allowed to be nervous as you now have a lot on your plate. More work and bigger tests, which more than less sucks but will go faster than a blink of the eye. Not just a few teachers but 7-8, which includes unlimited amount of unique classes to be taking, in which some will thrill you and others you might fall asleep in. You'll also meet new people (a lot), some who might be a class friend and another that sticks by your side for years to come. And those people that you aren't that stoked to see? Don't worry, you don't have to see them forever. Looking at your schedule and seeing the highs and lows of the classroom numbers that you have no idea where they're at? Easy to get lost, but everyone does. Pretty soon you'll find secret ways to get there in seconds. To everything in high school there are pros and cons, but if you stay positive and have fun time will fly right before your eyes.

High school is a big part of your life, so don't spend it stressing over the little things. Go to the sporting events, hangout with friends on the weekends, join a club, but get your work done. Because in these four years will be the most freedom you get to have. And within these years are endless memories to make and things you'll never forget. After awhile you won't remember the first day jitters but all what you've accomplished, and it will be the best feeling in the world. They're right when they say it's a roller coaster full of ups and downs, but at graduation I swear you will look back on high school, and wish you could do it again.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
