By a city girl that stumbled into country music

Time Out

I go into very specific music binges. Last month it was Chainsmokers and their remixes, the month before that was 13th century Italian vocal music, and now I'm currently kicking it to female-fronted country & bluegrass music.

A short disclaimer: I'm a Northern, big-city girl through and through. It wasn't until I started college in southern Virginia that I started listening to country music, after several recommendations and not-so-subtle threats that I educate myself.

So I apologize for my short-sidedness in 2015. But, here I am, matured, on a country music kick. Here's what I'm currently listening to:

The Show Ponies

They describe themselves as "indie-grass," which I love. Their newest album, How It All Goes Down, just dropped this January. You might be familiar with "Gone" (which I can mostly play on guitar but not quite) or catchy and loveable songs like "Whiskey and Whine" and "Stupid." The Show Ponies are based in Los Angeles but hail from Arkansas, Texas, and all over the US. Their music is fun, fast-paced, and full of life.

Sugarland

I've been waiting for a new album since "The Incredible Machine" in 2012. Wikipedia is telling me that they're on a hiatus, which is fine and I am FINE. IT'S FINE. Meanwhile I'm dancing down the sidewalk to "Stuck Like Glue" and I'm inspired to stop being the sidechick of the boyfriend I don't have, thanks to "Stay." It's got me having all kinds of feels despite not being able to relate to the song. I'm so into the harmonies and just the right amount of edginess.

Little Big Town

My roommate (a native Virginian) was singing along to "Pontoon" one day: "out here in the open..." when without thinking I joined in with "mmmmhh motorboatin'." And our friendship grew a different bond after that. LBT's eighth studio album, The Breaker is out right now, with the popular single "Better Man," which was actually written by Taylor Swift. Thanks Wikipedia! And thanks, Little Big Town, for getting me singing along to catchy songs like "Boondocks" even though I probably couldn't tell you what a Boondock is.

Della Mae

You might be shaking your head at me but I hadn't heard of Della Mae until Spotify recommended them. "Boston Town" is the perfect song to start this Grammy nominated bluegrass band's second album off with a bang. The powerhouse alto vocals and powerful female musicians make my heart sing. Yet they simply say, "Della Mae is what happens when five women decide to tour the world."

Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum really got the ball rolling on my country music kick even before I knew it was rolling. All of a sudden I looked at my iTunes library and said "Whoops! I guess I have three of their albums!" "Need You Now" is probably their best-known single (it was on Dance Dance Revolution a long time ago), but "Own the Night" is my personal favorite. "Long Gone," "When You Were Mine," and "American Honey" are next on the list. Check out their latest single, "You Look Good"!

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
