43 Times I Should Have Listened To My Mom

Having lived through the torture that is high school and completing a successful two years in college, I’ve come to learn that everything my mother said was true. With this being said, I probably should have listened to her the first time when she told me...

1. A boy who treats his mother poorly will also treat his girlfriend or wife poorly.

2. That nothing good comes from being out past 3 a.m.

3. That there will times to party in college, don’t feel that missing that high school party will ruin your life.

4. There is life beyond the four years in high school.

5. But your decisions in high school will determine your future.

6. You will never regret studying for that exam.

7. Or finishing your work more than 10 minutes before the due date.

8. That people don't call others beautiful if they don't mean it.

9. Beauty is 80 percent confidence and 20 percent looks.

10. That there is a fine line between confident and cocky.

11. Having one friend who will always be there is more important than 10 who don't know your middle name.

12. You don't have to be skinny to be beautiful.

13. Just because you can fit into it..doesn't mean you should wear it. Just because it’s in fashion, doesn’t mean it looks good on you.

14. Success is measured in happiness, not wealth.

15. Presents are good, but the presence of those who love you are better.

16. Darker shades of makeup don't make you tanner.

17. Most of the time the more expensive makeup is worth it.

18. Dress for success, every day.

19. Sweats are great at home, not so much anywhere else.

20. Anyone who abuses you doesn't love you.

21. And there's more forms of abuse than physical.

22. You will never regret a workout.

23. Looking tan is nice when your young, but skin that's been baked in the sun for years doesn't when your 40.

24. Life is a lot more enjoyable when you’re happy.

25. Don't waste a second of your life with someone who doesn't value your worth.

26. Don't worry about that piece of cake.

27. Or two...

28. If someone wants to see you, then they will make an effort.

29. Not everyone in life will like you, and that’s okay.

30. Talking bad about someone else won’t make you better.

31. But getting talked about, well it’s going to happen, so shake it off.

32. Your siblings will turn out to be your best friend, despite how many times you hurt them or threw them under the bus.

33. You’re worth the wait.

34. No one looks classy with a cigarette in their mouth.

35. Always eat before a night out.

36. But the pizza at the end of the night will catch up to you.

37. Never brag about yourself, let your actions speak from themselves.

38. Not matter how hard you try, there will always be someone better.

39. Your best is always good enough.

40. No boy is worth ruining your mascara for.

41. Always tell the truth, the first time.

42. Doing drugs leads to nothing good.

43. You are beautiful.

Unfortunately, being the stereotypical teenager I was, I learned all these lessons the hard way. Looking back, I could have avoided a lot of heartbreak and embarrassment by accepting her never ending advice.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
