Birds Eye View

Look out the window and believe what you see. The little things in life are often the biggest.

A friend of mine recently shared an experience with me about her yoga class. She explained that the teacher told her a story that stopped her in her tracks. "Do you know why birds chirp in the morning? Some say it is to let their friends and family know they made it through to the new day." It dawned on me how simple and rare this was. Something we hear or perhaps block out every morning could have such an immense meaning behind it.

These are the little things in life that make life worth living. During one of the hardest times of my life, I often would wake up at sunrise just to hear the birds chirping. It reminded me of new beginnings, it reminded me that there was beauty in the world. Similar to this, something else that is very close to my heart is the stars in the sky. It is humbling to know that we are a tiny speck in a huge world. Regardless of the weather or life's circumstances, the stars continue to shine every night and so should you.

Do you ever gaze out the window and see something you cannot believe? These simple reminders in life are key to turning a bad day into a good one. By staying focus on your surroundings, you are reminded that the little things often end up being the big ones. These reminders turn our "buts" into "ifs." We are reminded to not fixate on the "if only"'s of life and think of how to accept where we are in the present moment.

At one point in our lives, we wanted to be exactly where we are now. We wished, we hoped, we prayed. We wanted to give up because getting to where we are now seemed impossible. If we take a step back and appreciate everything we have done to help ourselves, we realize how capable we are. How we can make the impossible possible. On the contrary, if we focus on the negative, we train ourselves to only see our downfalls. We so easily overlook the good in our lives.

Start today by noticing the good in every morning. Work yourself to finding gratitude in every day, even if it's just your coffee being just right. There is so much to look forward to in this life. Your mindset completely controls how you respond to it. So even if your tire gets flat and you're late to work or your bank account is overcharged or you get dumped. Never forget that how you respond is the ultimate factor between these things making and breaking your days. These days add up, they are not meaningless. Fix your mindset to gratitude and acceptance and you are ensured to find fulfillment.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast โ€œBirthdayโ€ on anyoneโ€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to โ€œBack In The U.S.S.Rโ€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iโ€™m not someone to โ€œfangirlโ€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
