I feel incredibly grateful to have been granted the opportunity to attend a well respected four year university. I think it is extremely important to learn how to balance life on a college campus. There are always exciting events happening on campus and interesting clubs to join, in which students can create life-long memories with friends. It is critical for students to be able to balance their academic and social lives to be a successful college student. I have included a list of ten ideas below to help other students balance their hectic schedules.
1. It is okay to say no to someone or to pass up an opportunity every once and a while.
It is not the end of the world if you cannot go out to see a friend, because you will have many other chances to have a full social life in college. Sometimes you have to choose between your academic and social life, and it is necessary for your academic career that you recognize when you need to spend extra time studying for a course.
2. If you are struggling in a course, do not be ashamed to ask for help.
It may seem like you are the only person who does not understand the content being taught, but I assure you other students are struggling with the same material. There are several options you have when you are struggling a course. You could ask the Professor for help directly, create a study group with people in your class, or take advantage of the peer tutoring center offered at your university.
3. Get a planner!
I would suggest investing in an agenda to write down all of your work due for the week. It is easy to forget assignment in college when you have a busy schedule. I have found that I do not feel as stressed out when I use a day planner. My favorite part of using an agenda is being able to cross out an assignment that I have finished because I feel immediate relief that I accomplished work I set out to do.
4. Don't forget to hit the gym when you can.
I would also recommend getting into an exercise routine that works for you. Exercising can decrease your stress level because it releases endorphins in your body. You have the option to use the gym on campus, go for a run, or even take exercise courses at your college. I have found that it is easier for me to focus when I am on a healthy gym routine.
5. Make sure you are eating correctly and taking care of yourself.
Sometimes college schedules can become so hectic that it is easy to forget to have a meal, which can easily make you feel tired and run down.
6. If you are feeling homesick or missing your family, call and let them know!
There's nothing wrong with wanting to check in and see how your family is doing, or to check in on your animals at home. You can also call your friends that do not attend the same school as you just to keep in touch.
7. Join clubs you're interested in!
I would also suggest joining a club that pertains to your interests on campus. There are clubs for people who enjoy sports, media, culture, and there is even a sign language club.
8. Avoid procrastination
It is important to not procrastinate your work. If you do procrastinate you may feel overwhelmed and you may not be able to dedicate as much time to your homework for each class. I would spread your work out throughout the week to avoid procrastination.
9. Destress when it gets to be too much
If you feel that your stress levels are becoming too high, I would take one of the yoga classes on offered campus. It is amazing how the art mediation can relax your body, and give you a new perspective on life in general. Depending on the yoga course you take you may also receive good workout during the course.
10. You always have a support system
At times college may feel overwhelming, but remember you always have people supporting you. I would take the time to bond with your roommates and friends to let them know how much you appreciate their friendship.
