Whovians around the world, rejoice!
Saturday night marked the return of television's longest running sci-fi show, Doctor Who. As the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, enters his ninth season since the 2005 reboot, let’s review some of the highlights of this season’s premiere and speculate about what’s coming up.
Readers be warned: spoilers lie ahead!
A medieval rock show? The Doctor tearing up riff after riff in front of a group of rowdy English folk? Where can we sign up for this?
The puns. Oh, the puns. Twelve has always had a wry sense of humor, but his grand entrance with an axe of his own choosing show that his dad skills extend beyond putting kids to sleep.
Michelle Gomez is utterly fantastic as Missy. She manages to be kooky and spine-chilling at the same time: we want to stop her from, y'know, wreaking havoc across the stars, but we also can’t help wondering what she’ll do next. Hey, Missy, you do blow our minds.
This is the best outfit that Clara Oswin Oswald has ever worn. The dress—the leather jacket—the feminine and edgy haircut! This is a woman who knows how to dress for any occasion, from recalling her memories with Jane Austen to facing off against Daleks.
The production values, too, have come a long way since 2005. Granted, a lot of that is due to advancements in our own technology; for instance, the show wasn’t filmed in high-definition until Planet of the Dead. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see that a show with such a grand scale has the captivating visuals to send viewers across universes with the Doctor.
The Doctor isn’t going to die. We’ve seen this time and time again, especially under Moffat’s reign, and it does provide for some entertainment. We always want to know how the Doctor will escape this time, but we never believe that he’ll actually die. After all, if there’s no Doctor, then there’s no Doctor Who. That being said, the Doctor’s scenes with Davros represent some of the best work Peter Capaldi has done thus far on the show.
Even the big spoiler for Saturday—the return of Davros and the Daleks—isn't really that much of a surprise. We never really believe that anyone, especially an archenemy of the Doctor's, stays dead—at least not for long.
But, you know what? It was a great reveal, and we can't wait to see what the Doctor has up his sleeve next week!
