Former Detroit Lion running back Jahvid Best will be competing in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next month. Best will run in the 100 meters for St. Lucia. Best is the first ex NFL athlete to compete in the Olympics.
The former first round pick only played in two seasons after a series of concussions cut his career short. After his retirement, Best returned to the University of California to finish his degree and serve as a graduate assistant. He has been running track professionally for the past two years.
Best was born in California but his father holds dual citizenship in St. Lucia, which allows him to compete for the small Caribbean island. Best ran a 10.16-second time at a meet in April, which was within Olympic qualifying standard time for the event, which gave him eligibility to compete. Best’s time would not have been good enough to make the American team.
