One of my biggest pet peeves is when people my age claim to be "too old" for Disney movies. In my opinion, Disney films do such a great job of expressing the importance of values such as family, true friendship and loyalty, and you are never too old for such things. One of my favorite Disney movies that did a pretty superb job at doing this was "Lilo & Stitch."
If you aren't familiar with one of the greatest films of all time, you're missing out. The story follows young Lilo, who lives with her older sister in Hawaii. One day, they decide to adopt a dog but end up coming home with Experiment 626, also known as Stitch. This blue ball of trouble makes a great addition to the family, and viewers of the film fall in love with the connection developed between the members. Many people argue that "Frozen" was the first Disney movie to venture away from boy/girl relationships, but boy, were they wrong.
Lilo and her sister's relationship was so genuine and realistic, and let's not forget that both girls are women of color with some great curves. Lilo's sister, Nani, literally stepped up at 19 years old and raised her younger sister after their parents passed. If that's not a true Disney princess, I don't know what is. The girls are both weird in a great way, and I think that is what helps make this film feel so heartwarming and pure. Neither set out to be perfect, and both are happy with who they are, and in my mind, that makes them Disney royalty.
Stitch, on the other hand, seems to come in and mess everything up. This wild alien may take a long time adjusting, but in the end, he makes the perfect addition to the family, or should I say ohana. According to the film, "Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten." Most fans know this saying by heart, and it means a lot to them. I have even seen people with ohana tattoos.
I could go on and on as to why "Lilo & Stitch" is one of the greatest Disney movies, but in the end, the only thing I can really say is to watch the movie. Watch all of them, even. (There are multiple!) The fun and relatable characters paired with a fun location and a backstory that pulls at your heartstrings make this movie a must for people of all ages.
