I Like Hanging out with my Family

Mostly because they put up with me

I Like Hanging out with my Family
Jeff Enlow

I like hanging out with my family. I don't think many would say that this is an unpopular opinion, it seems that the majority of people at least put up with very family for a limited amount of time.

As a kid, my parents made sure that "family fun time" was an integral part of our childhoods. Whether it were family vacations to Walt Disney World, obnoxiously loud dinners at whatever establishment we all could begrudgingly agree on, or just an overly aggressive night of Scattegories, the greater portion of our weekday nights and weekends were spent being around each other.

This was all fine, until my teenage angst ridden years were upon me. At a time were I had more books than friends, I was willing to do whatever it took in order to fit in. However, fitting in came at a price. It required abandoning the ideals that my parents had spent countless hours instilling in me: family came first. If you wanted to be popular, you had to be ready at any moments notice to drop everything in order to meet your new "friends" at Sonic or at so-and-so's house because if you dared choose the evening of Mario Kart you promised your little brother, then you could kiss your social life goodbye. I spent junior high and most of my high school career fighting with my parents, insisting that I would literally die if I didn't go out both nights of every weekend. I wasn't the role model I should have been for my younger siblings, believing that their desire to sit at home with me to watch the Middle was the epitome of lame. I regret the years wasted treating my family as second class citizens the most.

This past spring break we took another family trip to Sanibel Island, Florida. Nothing spectacular occurred on this vacation, just another couple of days spent at the beach laughing at anything and everything, but after my plane landed in my school town on a cloudy Wednesday morning, all I could do was cry. I wanted nothing more than to jump on the next flight back to Florida, simply to be with my family just a few days longer. They're the only people in this world I can truly be myself with, and I wouldn't trade the moments I have with them for anything in the world.

It's summer now, and I have somehow found a way to fill every single second of every day with either a job, or school, or volunteering. I know that at the first chance of a day off, most college kids would run to the nearest lake, pool or bar to see old high school friends, but not me. You can find me in my basement, binge watching Pretty Little Liars and old seasons of Survivor with the funniest, most loyal, and most loving people in the entire world: my family.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
