In Light of Recent Events...

Silence is a luxury. Don't give up your voice.

In light of recent events, I had initially decided to remain silent on the issues brought front and center this week. Whether it was in fear of being labeled "ignorant" by some or "weak" by others, I had accepted the fact that perhaps my silence was better than a misplaced opinion on social media.

Only recently, however, did I realize that my chosen silence was in fact - a luxury.

I have never been afraid to walk down the street because of the clothes I’m wearing or the color of my skin, but there are countless people who are. The lives of those who were taken from us far too soon have been forced to stay silent forever. And while I personally have never feared for my life after getting pulled over by an officer of the law, there are those who have always been afraid, and until some met their unjust demise by the very officer set to protect and serve our communities, they have been forced to be silent forever. And while I have never been brave enough to put a uniform on my back and a badge of honor on my chest, there are those who serve our communities tirelessly, and as we saw this week, they too were discriminately targeted and slain - forced to be silent. Forever.

To choose to remain silent is simply to give up one's voice. There are millions of Americans who would die to be heard - as too many of them already have. Our right to be silent was stripped away as soon as citizens of our nation were stripped of their right to live - solely based on the color of their skin or the color of their uniform.

I’ve seen the passion of so many individuals on social media, using hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter and #BlueLivesMatter, and while some will argue that these are divisive and aren’t inclusive enough, others will argue that each movement brings their respective communities together - but I’m not here to argue for one or the other. It's quite reasonable to agree and disagree with aspects of both. But agreeing with one movement and undermining another accomplishes nothing.

What I’m asking for isn’t easy, and it isn’t for everybody, but if you’re as determined to ensure liberty and justice for all as you are on your Facebook posts, you know that actions speak louder than words. I, for one, am tired of hearing "something needs to be done," and then going back to what we were already doing as if nothing ever happened. So let’s actually do something. Let’s initiate a community-led discussion with our law enforcement agencies and public officials to bridge the gap once and for all and soothe the sentiments that have dominated the national conversation for the past week.

The ARCH Initiative, or Actions for Reuniting the Communities of Houston, will be a non-profit community organization that will go beyond party-lines in an effort to create a prolonged conversation throughout our city on the topics that concern us heavily, whether it’s police relations, government transparency, or any other issue. We cannot sit back and wait until another national tragedy happens in our own backyard to come together. In order to create a positive change, you’ve got to start with building relationships from within. And in order to create a circle of trust, you’ve gotta start with an arch. I could not resist the pun. I encourage you to join me in making this organization a reality. Just because we’re young, doesn’t mean we can’t accomplish great things. Let’s show the world that maybe we’re not the entitled generation they think we are. Thank you all for watching, I hope to hear from some of you in the days to come, and as always, God bless America.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
