When a lot of people think of great movies, usually the biggest blockbusters of the summer or the newest action movie come to mind. Which is totally fine, but when I think of good movies to watch, I almost always end up in front of the TV with Lifetime Movie Network.
I know, I know, for most that know me, it's not much of a surprise. But for those that don't, you may be wondering how in the world I could enjoy sitting through two hours of drama. Sure I'll admit, sometimes they are a bit cheesy and superficial; but for the most part, I think its quality entertainment.
I guess my love for Lifetime movies started when I was in high school. I remember one of the first ones I ever watched was “Odd Girl Out,” which was a 2005 film that starred Alexa Vega as a girl who was being bullied by her so-called friends. I think I was drawn to it because I could relate to what she (the girl in the movie) was going through. The year before, I had been bullied by girls that used to be my friends. And it hurt, a lot. So, somehow in a weird way, seeing similarities on-screen made me feel less alone. It made me feel comforted to know that people were actually taking the time to shed light on these issues, no matter how they chose to do so.
This appreciation continued and so did the variety of movies I'd watch. I've seen a lot of cool and crazy things-- from cults to cyber stalking - and I can't seem to get enough of it. I think it's because it allows me to sort of 'check out' of reality for a minute and get engrossed into something less stressful. I'm assuming this is because the drama is not happening to me, it's happening to whatever character in the film. There's so much variety in the films too - from romance to rumors, or murders mixed in with affairs. Besides, who doesn'tlove a good scandal? I've also managed to find some solid music recommendations for my playlist and new actors to look out for in other roles.
While some of them (referring to you, “The Perfect Roommate!”) are a little bit out-there in terms of plot or characters, most of the films I've gotten a chance to see have been pretty good (kudos to “Girl Fight” and “The Assault” for shedding light on important female issues)! So, if you're ever in the mood for something easy to find on TV, then I'd highly suggest checking out Lifetime's TV channel or Lifetime's Movie Network.
