How Your Lifestyle Changes During A New Semester

One month into the new fall semester, have you notice the changes?

How Your Lifestyle Changes During A New Semester

First things first, pat yourself on the back because you’ve made it through the first month of the semester! Yes, it’s been an entire month since we kissed our summer days goodbye, and many things have changed since then without us even noticing. A new semester means leaving your old habits behind and to become the responsible young adult you are suppose to be. For most students, our lifestyle changes, to accommodate our class and sometimes also, our work schedule.

College students are always sleep deprived. Just ask the person next to you in class how they are doing. They are most likely to tell you that they are tired from spending all night doing homework. Researchers from the University of Alabama studied students, and say 33 percent of the adult population doesn't get enough sleep. In the case of college students, that figure is 60 percent. During breaks, most of us worry about work, but once the semester starts we have to prioritize both. However, we don’t do it the right way. By managing well our time, we can all fight our lack of sleep.

As the season changes so as the clothes we wear. The first week of classes we dress up nice and cute, because we want to give a good first impression of us, to our classmates and professors. Once the chilly weather starts, everyone on campus is just wearing hoodies and sweatpants. This is reasonable for most college students because, since we don’t have time to sleep, why would we have time to pick an outfit? We just want to be comfortable during those 2-3 hour lectures.

Remember the long summer nights spent with friends? Well that doesn’t happen as much as we would like to during the semester. You see your friends on campus and they invite you to hang out with them. You really want to, but realized you are taking 19 credits, therefore you have tons of homework to get done. So now you don’t have time for sleep and friends.

Not only has the semester changed the way we spent our time but it has changed the relationship we have with our best friend, Netflix. A big portion of our free time is spent binge watching our favorite shows but now we barely have time to even watch a movie. This forces us to take a break with our good friend Netflix.

The only relationship we can handle during the semester is our relationship with food. We tend to eat more when the days are colder and stressful. We always have time for food because food is always there through the tough times. When you are writing a paper, you have a bag of chips next to your laptop. When you are in class, you have your coffee and bagel next to your notes. Food just gets us!

We often don't pay attention to some of these changes we go through, but we should pay attention to the amount of sleep we get. It’s all about managing well our time so we can take this skill for our future professional lives. When it comes to food, if we are going to start eating more, then we should be eating more healthy snacks, instead of junk food. Lastly, not having time for friends or for your favorite shows aren’t a big deal because they are not going anywhere.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
