-Pursuing a Life Worth Living-
I’m a male student, and a queer farm boy whose dreams have always far surpassed my means, I have come to the crashing realization that being an adult seems impossible. Or so the little voice in my head tells myself after a really draining day. Luckily, I have always been surrounded by larger, stronger voices who have repeated that I can do anything I set my mind and heart to.
I’m from a town that eats people. By that I mean that everyone who’s born, or moves there, is trapped. Stuck. Never to broaden their horizons again. I noticed this growing up, so when college came rolling around I was dead set on getting out. The trick was to go somewhere, where I would not only be free of my depressing hometown, but somewhere I could pursue a life far beyond my wildest dreams. I found that place at Westminster.
Not only has Westminster allowed me to set myself towards my goals of being a successful, and driven businessman. But being at Westminster has pushed me to strive even harder to be a better human. The world we live in is a hard place, full of hate and condemnation. The connections, clubs, and heart of the school has proven that it’s not only being a successful person, but also being a heartfelt, caring and giving person.
Success is in the lives we effect for the better. It’s in the eyes of children we help. The tears of joy from the people we wave at, smile to, pray for, and give food to. It’s by the people who we march for, speak out for, and who’s lives and dignity we fight for. I will never measure my success on my bank accounts. But on how full my heart feels at the end of a day. That’s my motto. To give all of myself. All the time. What purpose is there in life but to make sure every life is valued.
