I fancy myself a writer. It's true, I do. The things I write the most are little poems, called haikus. Haikus, if you don't already know, are commonly three lines long: the first line is five syllables, the second is seven syllables, and the third is five syllables. I like to use this technique, but I use it in a more modern way - I create what I call "master haikus," which are multiple haikus connected together in theme and verse. Today, I want to share with you a master haiku I wrote about life as a twenty-something. Enjoy.
Life seems rather bland,
And pointless at times,
For twenty-somethings.
Pushing through college,
Homework followed by boredom:
Repetition kills.
The future, daunting,
And not that much better, no -
Why go through it all?
Life seems pointless and
Full of hurting, loss, failure,
For twenty-somethings...
But you are young still!
So become a romantic.
Rose colored glasses
Suit your complexion.
Wake up with the sunrise, smile.
Think of the lists...oh!
The movies to watch,
Books to devour like sweets.
Eyes must be open
To see Mount Rushmore,
To peruse shelves upon shelves,
See your mother's smile,
Or maybe your child's!
Your eyes can be closed sometimes.
On abrupt airplanes,
For surprise parties,
Breeze stroking your face, leaning
Halfway out the car.
Dear twenty-somethings,
Remember the lists, the smiles.
Hold tight to your life!
You will be dragged down,
Suffocated under waves,
Held heavy with doubt...
But I promise you,
There will be moments that make
The sadness worth it.
Life never ceases
to surprise, and encourage,
the twenty-somethings.
