Life Through The Eyes Of A Fraternal Twin

"There is literally no way you're twins... you have to be lying."

Although I have no clue what life without a twin sister is like, I know enough to understand it is in fact way different than just having a sibling.

As I grow up and meet new people, more often than not, I hear "Wow! You have a twin? Does she look like you?"

When I show people a picture of myself, a blonde with short hair, next to her, a brunette with long hair they seem disappointed. Disappointed as if we're basically not twins because we are fraternal. Not only do we not look alike, but there have been many times we're accused of lying.

LOL, yes... you heard me right. We have sat through multiple situations where people have accused us of lying. I couldn't even begin to count how many times this has happened. Some people wholeheartedly believe we are not twins which at times is really annoying, but for the most part, it just causes hysterical laughing.

"There is literally no way you're twins... you have to be lying."

"Are you sure you're twins?"

No, I'm not sure... maybe ask me again in an hour.

A good number of twins (more or less, identical) share the same friend groups because not only do they look like each other, but often have the same interests and act similar to one another.

We don't look alike, sound alike, act alike, or have the same friend groups.

No, this isn't depressing.

No, this isn't sad.

Though, not having the same friend groups does have its cons.

There will always be people that are two faced when talking to each of us as if they weren’t just talking a mess about one to the other.

There will always be people that feel they have to pick one of us to like, and one of us to dislike. I honestly won’t ever understand this. We are different people. You don’t have to pick who you like more.

At the same time, I don’t really care. I am glad to have a different friend group even dealing with situations like that.

I like having different friend groups.

I like not looking the exact same as somebody else.

I like having my own interests, my own hobbies.

If you were just like somebody else, what’s the point?

In my eyes, being a fraternal twin gives me more opportunities. It allows me to hold my own uniqueness. I wouldn't want to have another walking, talking "me". (Not to mention that would be a lot for everyone else to handle.)

Not that I’ve never clicked with somebody who was an identical twin, or dislike anyone who is, I’m just grateful for the opportunities I have through the unusual experience of being a fraternal twin, while still being able to hold my own uniqueness, and the good will always outweigh the bad.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
