The life of a lifeguard is not very easy, nor simple. It is a life that we dedicate ourselves to for three months straight. There are duties involved that not many can do, or want to do, for that matter. So here are some things, out of many, that we lifeguards go through on a daily basis.
You get to wake up early in the morning to put a swim suit on. How great is that? I would pick lifeguarding as my career just so I won't have to put real clothes on every day. But wearing a swim suit and being in the sun every day brings awful tan lines. At the end of the summer, this is how your skin will permanently look.
Which brings me to my next point: smelling like sunscreen and chlorine all the time is really annoying. You might as well wear this hat at all times.
Bossing people around is so much fun, until people just don't listen at all. How many times do I have to blow my whistle before getting your attention? Let me answer that: a billion times.
Every time you see someone pretending to be dead, you have a mini- heart attack because you still have to jump in to save them, anyway. But better safe than sorry, I always say.
Working on days that are slow makes for fun conversations you have in your head. Even if no one is in your water, you still have to watch it in case someone does come in it to swim. But nevertheless, these days are so boring.
And then you have to work on days like this:
And you start to freak out because not even the best lifeguard can watch this many people at one time, and if something does happen while on your watch you feel like you just failed at life.
It can be fun -- or it can be hard. Either way, the life of a lifeguard is very interesting, and there is no other job that can really compare. You, literally, get to save lives and be a hero. Nothing can top that.
