Imagine walking into a party, and the DJ's set is rocking the club. Then you turn around and notice that the DJ is a... female? Would you be shocked? Well, you shouldn’t be. Female DJs are out here and just might be better than your everyday male DJ!
Being a female DJ has its perks and sometimes those perks could go both ways on a wide spectrum. For starters, it gives people (especially men) a chance to change their views and look at things differently in terms of gender roles. For instance, it's common for a guy to come up to me and gives me a dap or something as simple as a thumbs up to let me know that I’m doing a good job, and it’s such a great feeling, I love it.
But sometimes, it seems as if they didn’t expect me to have a good set? Like they didn’t expect me to be as good as I am, and you’ll be surprised because I get a lot of compliments with hidden messages, for example, “Wow, you're good,” or “You’re the DJ?" or my favorite, “I underestimated you,” like what? Guys are some funny creatures.
In this male dominated industry men are often the first contenders when it comes to booking gigs, which make it difficult for women. As much as we put ourselves out there, we will always become second. This then causes women to over sexualize their selves more than they need too. Then their outfits become noticed rather than their sets. I personally have never had to dress “sexy” in order to land a gig but I do tend to catch myself drowning my face in makeup and cute clothes but that’s my choice.
All men have to do is throw on a cute pair of jeans, a shirt, some sneakers and call it a day. It's sad, though, because a lot of women think “this is how the game is played,” and that if they want to be booked that is what they have to do. And it's like no girl, all you have to be is a good DJ. That’s it. Stop trying to overcompensate for others, do what you want to do. You’re here to play music for the people, not make a fashion statement.
All in all, I’ve been doing it for two years, and I love it. It's going to be interesting to see where it’ll take me, but of course, only time will tell. But in the meantime, I cant wait to graduate so that I can finally get myself more out there because college has been slowing me down. Though I had gigs up at school a lot, I was more focused on my schoolwork but as soon as May hits ill be hitting the streets of New York City, so make sure you stay on the lookout! You never know where you might see me.
And to all my fellow female DJs, you keep rockin’ the mic girl and keep spinnin’ those records! We see you ;)
