Rascal Flatts and I had the same "aha" moment when it comes to life and highways. The only difference is that I know what the band meant for the first time, as I am about to turn 22, entering my senior year of college. If you have seen the movie "Cars," that is also where this music hit came from.
This song became a popular hit from the movie in 2006. A lot of us sing along to so many different types of songs, and we do not even understand or let our brains actually process what the lyrics mean. We just smile, bob our heads, and sometimes even close our eyes and scream and shout from the top of our lungs. This Disney movie song has so much meaning behind it.
It is so crazy how sometimes we can be singing such valuable lessons, but we may not even realize it. It is the same with roadway signs on a highway. Sometimes we can be looking at something so simple and learn so much from it. How often are you driving along the highway and you see a sign and you think "If I take this exit, it could be life changing?"
Life is like an exit sign on the highway. At any point in your life, you can decide to make a huge change in your life; to arrive at your final destination.
When our GPS is telling us to take a certain turn, and we know it's wrong, we continue not to take the exit and continue to keep going. We either follow what we think is right and end up correct, or we end up incorrect.
Have you ever realized, this is exactly how life works? At any point in time, you can decide if you want to make changes to your life, or continue to keep living just simply how you always have been.
In college, if you feel as though your major is not what you really want to do for the rest of your life, you can take that exit and hop into something else. It will take some time for you to realize and decide what it is that you really want to turn into your life career someday.
The people that you surround yourself with, friends, you can choose to exit that friend group if there is only negativity being brought into your life. It is your choice to walk away and hang around a different crowd that does make you happy.
There are a number of "exits" that we must take along the highway for us to reach our final destination of life, and reach our full potential.
At times, we may have to take a detour due to road work or construction. There may be times that we get lost and become frustrated because we do not know where we are going. It is the exact same way with life. When we sometimes become confused which exit to take or which path to go, we become frustrated, confused, and sometimes drained.
These moments right here, are when you need to just take a couple of deep breaths and trust in the Lord above. We may take a wrong exit sometimes, or at least what is wrong in terms of our plan to reach our destination, but sometimes, God is just trying to lead us in a different direction that he knows is better than we know ourselves.
The next time you see an exit sign, take the time to connect with God and talk with him. Think about all of the exits and choices and turns you had to make to get to where you are today and be open to making positive changes in your life.
