Binging TV shows has become a norm in our society and although a lot of people do not see that as a good thing, looking back on my own experiences, I have taken away a lot of important life lessons from all the television shows that I have mindlessly sat and watched every single episode of. Here are some lessons I can attribute to some of my many Netflix binges:
How I Met Your Mother-
Good things take time.
Finding the love of your life is hard, but nobody knows this better than Ted Mosby. This show is about his long journey to finding out who he is, and ultimately, the love of his life. He is telling the story to his kids of how he met their mother and all the weird experiences he had dating and hanging with his friends. After many many years of discouragement and striking out, he realizes it was worth the wait.
Awkward:
Timing is everything
Throughout all of the seasons of the hit MTV show, it follows the relationship Jenna and Matty, two high schoolers who ultimately grow close after a rendezvous in a summer camp’s janitor's closet. Jenna is an unpopular, awkward girl who blogs about her life, and Matty is anything but the same, as he is considered a high school jock. Throughout them breaking each other's hearts time and time again, everybody knows they are meant for each other, but the timing never seems to line up quite right. (Hulu/Amazon Prime)
Shameless:
Don’t be ashamed of who you are.
When you are born into a messed up family, you have no choice but to put up with it and do the best you can to take charge of your own life. This show follows a family of siblings working together to raise themselves due to their drunken absent father. This hard-headed family is proud of who they become and even with a lot of obstacles in their way, they know that they need to care for one another and not let others bring them down.
Grey’s Anatomy:
Life is about taking chances.
Grey’s Anatomy is a roller coaster of a show but in the end, many of the characters take away this key message. This show circles around a hospital of surgeons who tend to mix their personal lives with their professional lives. They make breakthroughs in the scientific and medical community, as well as their life overall, finding loves and true friends in their workplace. Without taking chances like they have done in the show time and time again, perhaps their lives would be a lot different.
Friends:
Real friends will ALWAYS be there for you.
No matter what issue you are going through in your life, real friends will be there to support and take care of you. No matter how often you see each other or how crazy your lives are, they will always be there at the end of the day. This show follows six friends and their adventures, while always knowing they are a family and would be down for a cup of coffee together anytime.
American Horror Story
Two heads are better than one.
Although in this show it can be taken literally, two heads really are better than one. This show is different every season, but conclusively it is about people working together to escape some sort of terrifying occurrence. Having people by your side not only makes you more comfortable but also might help you escape some scary situations in life.
Glee:
Don't care what others think.
This is another show about an unpopular crowd doing what they love and disregarding what others think about them. They face a lot of bullies, but end up growing, reaching for their dreams and putting down the haters. It just proves that you should love who you are and embrace what makes you unique.
Breaking Bad:
You can always make a change.
Life is pretty unpredictable and when science teacher, Walter White, finds out he has a deadly illness, he must find a way to make money to support his family. Although becoming a meth manufacturer is not ideal, it proves that even a simple high school teacher can make a big change in his life, regardless of his age.
The Fosters:
Family goes beyond blood.
After years in the foster system, a brother and sister finally find a home with a nice family. Even though they have some complications along the way, their unconditional love for eachother is extrodinary and proves that you don’t have to be related by blood to be considered a family.
