Useful Life Lessons For The Average Twentysomething

Life is about learning lessons. Here are some I've learned in 20 years.

If you are like me, you think a lot about how everything you have experienced influences how you go about your daily life. It is a constant thought, and every experience you go through adds a new story to the library in you head. From those stories, you pull important moments and transform them into personal mantras that transpose into your everyday life. Here is a list of some of the advice I've acquired and life lessons I’ve learned so far.

1. Before a big day, make your bed in the morning. You’ll be thankful when you get back home.

2. Go for walks.

3. Listen to LOUD music.

4. Dance while listening to LOUD music.

5. I mean really rock out, whether you are by yourself or around other people.

6. Sing, even if you’re not good at it.

7. Stay organized.

8. Write down your thoughts.

9. Let yourself get excited.

10. Show your excitement.

11. You are your worst critic.

12. Find magic in everything.

13. Be goofy.

14. Learn how to empathize.

15. Go people watching.

16. Look up at the clouds.

17. Look up at the stars.

18. Do a lot of thinking.

19. Take into consideration what others think, but make decisions based on what you personally think.

20. Take time to understand people.

21. Enjoy learning new things.

22. Ask questions.

23. If someone shows you something they like, pay attention.

24. Do things for the sake of doing them.

25. Take criticism kindly.

26. Prove those who doubt you wrong.

27. Be yourself.

28. Learn about what others love.

29. Give yourself a break.

30. Listen to your parents and grandparents.

31. Learn about your roots.

32. Understand yourself.

33. Learn to accept defeat graciously.

34. Stay humble.

35. Learn to appreciate art.

36. Create your own purpose.

37. Listen to understand, not to reply.

38. If you work hard, you can play hard.

39. Love yourself before you try to love someone else.

40. Random acts of kindness are a must.

41. The world does not owe you anything.

42. Stay open-minded.

43. Speak your mind even if everyone else is against you.

44. Learn how to whistle.

45. Find a place where you can forget everything else.

46. Enjoy time in which you are alone.

47. Learn how to be alone.

48. Learn how to be with others.

49. Enjoy time in which you are with others.

50. Enjoy everything as much as possible.

51. Make everything you do an adventure.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

14. You will try to go to the gym... but you will get too lazy at some point.

16. You will try to convince yourself that you can handle everything.

17. Finals week will try to kill you.

18. You won't like everyone, but you will find your best friends sooner or later.

19. You actually have to go to class.

20. Enjoy it, because you will be sad when it is all over.

Sometimes my brain just starts turning on an idea and it doesn't want to stop.

I don't know if it is related to my anxiety, perfectionism or depression. I don't know why it happens. It's frustrating, it's painful and it stops me from functioning.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.
