It's hard to leave any arcade without playing a quick round of Skee-Ball. Whether we are in a rush for tickets or have an extra quarter to spare, there's always a nostalgic draw to the classic game that brings more value to our educational foundations than we once thought. Here are just a few things you picked up as a child while you were trying to win extra tootsie rolls.

We have a limited number of shots

Whether it's a timed game or the shoot locks after a certain number of balls pass through, we all put a little more thought in our final few shots before they vanished. Similarly, as we grow older, we value expiring goods, like food and money, in the same strategic fashion. A true Skee-Ball champ probably savors their potato chips to the last bite, or maybe even last crumb.

Aim high, no matter the outcome

Though it may take a couple shots, we knew the high score couldn't be reached by aiming for the 20 all game long. Aiming high doesn't always go in our favor, but when we finally landed the perfect shot we understood the reward is worth the trial and error. Understanding risk in industry in the same way now allows us to apply and work for job promotions with less fear, knowing the reward may not come quickly but is worth the effort.

Hitting the bank (or bump at the end of the runway) is always a risk

Shooting at the right angle can come with great reward, or a total flop into the gutter. We learned, the hard way, that there will always be a speed bump to hinder the journey. However, the lesson learned from the bump in the road may launch us in a way we least expect.

It's ok if we fall short

It is rough having a ball hit the gutter, but it only makes a comeback that much sweeter. Like any rough patch in life, whether it be a job loss and breakup, our next shot is an open slate. The playing field hasn't changed, it's up to us to refocus, readjust, and aim higher.

No matter the score, it's always great game

It is never a straight shot, no matter how we take on the game of life. Through the ups and downs, we can find great joy in the achievements we strive for and goals we achieve. Even we do not beat the high score, we still can have trust that we will end up with significantly more tickets than most other arcade games.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
