Life Lessons Learned from 'A League Of Their Own'

Growing up a female athlete, "A League Of Their Own" was a must watch movie. When I first watched the movie at the age of about 10 with friends, it was a fun movie full of baseball. Re-watching this movie in my 20s now, I realize that there is much more to this movie than just a women's baseball team. So many important, wholesome life lessons could be learned from merely watching this great movie and here are just a few:

1. Always try new things, and give them a fair chance

Dottie initially declined the offer to tryout for the new women's softball league but after being convinced by Kit, she allows herself to give it a try. The experience ends up giving her unforgettable memories and makes her one of the first players on the first national women's baseball team.

You will never know what opportunities may become if you do not allow yourself to explore them.

2. Wake up early (or at least try to)

Kit and Dottie nearly miss this big life opportunity by sleeping late and almost missing their train to tryouts.

Always try to be awake early to get the most out of life and each given day.

3. Never let people's opinions on your appearance phase you

While trying out for the team, Marla is at first cut for her lowly looks, though she clearly has the talent necessary to compete. Marla's father then has to come up with an excuse as to why she should be allowed on the team and excused for her appearance.

No one should ever tell you that your appearance is holding you back or make you feel not good enough. Being your confident and happy self is always enough.

4. Actions speak louder than words

During their first game of the season, the team is made fun of for being a women's baseball team. Instead of trying to fight back with words, Dottie hits an amazing 3 run home-run to win the game and Ellen Sue throws a ball at a mans' head to knock him out.

Never listen to the insignificant words of other people and don't feel obligated to talk back to them. Always work hard and shut them up by proving them wrong.

5. Never be afraid to take charge

After their coach and team manager Jimmy shows up at a game, clearly un-phased by his duties as coach, Dottie decides to manage the team for the game.Though Jimmy does eventually come to finish the game as coach, Dottie's bravery to step up as a manger is proof that you are in control of each situation in your life.

Always know you that only you can choose how you live your life.

6. Never let a boy make you feel bad about yourself

One scene shows Doris talking about her boyfriend, who makes her feel weird for being a woman playing baseball. She decides to forget about him and tear up their photo together.

There are millions of guys in the world, never feel down because one doesn't like you.

7. Always believe in yourself and what you can achieve

After Kit sends home the game tie-ing run, she has enough faith in her base-running skills and practice to know that she can get the run and win the game for her team.

Have faith and always believe in yourself, no matter what the circumstances.

Though some of these lessons may seem petty and well-known ideas that girls are told to keep in mind, it's hard to always remember to live out these life lessons each and every day. However, when these lessons are taken to heart, great things are sure to occur, all thanks to "A League Of Their Own."

birthday party

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.

College Informations

Most of us have already started the spring semester, and for those of you who haven't started yet, you suck.

It seems like coming back from winter break wouldn't really be a break all things considered, since we all come back to school and pick up right where we left off. We know exactly what to expect, yet we're unprepared every single time.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

You know that all of these things apply to you. You'll just never tell.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
