America just elected Voldemort. This is our reality. With a country so divided, it is easy to turn on one another. Before we know it, people will start breaking pinky promises and swearing on our “Grandmother’s Grave” will mean nothing. We must not add to the darkness the Dementors are already spreading in America, so it is important now more than ever to remember there is always light in the darkest of times.

We grew up with a boy named Harry Potter who taught us how to laugh, how to live, and how to love. The new movie from J. K. Rowling, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is sure to remind us all how important magical friendship and compassion is. To provide the light in this dark time here is a compiled list of all the valuable lessons learned from Harry Potter.

1. “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Love Is The Most Powerful Type of Magic

3. “If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

4. “We’ve all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” -Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix

5. “It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

6. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

7. “Dark and difficult times lie ahead. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Most importantly, we must remember that evil never wins. The future holds an infinite amount of happy things to look forward to, like “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which is sure to be full of more magical lessons for all of us. We must look forward to the simple things that fill us with joy because in these dark times, that is how we turn on the light and keep the magic in our lives.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
