I probably watch too much TV. That being said, my time hasn't been wasted. I've learned a lot. Here are just a few things I've learned over the years.
1. All magic comes with a price.
This might be better changed to "the easy way out comes with a price." In "Once Upon A Time," the characters will often use magic to get out of a hairy situation, but as Rumplestiltskin always warns, "All magic comes with a price." Often, magic causes as many problems as it solves. Seriously, just pick a random episode, and you will probably find a character using magic to have disastrous results.
2. Fingers are called "phalanges."
And they dance. This is just one of the little nuggets of knowledge I've picked up from watching "Bones."
3. Some people will choose principle over logic, even when they know they're wrong.
"Downton Abbey's" Violet Crawley is opinionated about just about everything and if you don't hold her opinion, you are wrong... But she sometimes chooses principle over logic, like when she tried to stop the hospital from combining with York's in Season Six.
4. There's always that one guy who never seems to learn.
Tony DiNozzo is somewhat arrogant, endearing, and also completely oblivious... Especially when talking about his boss, Gibbs. He usually gets slapped for it (and many other things), but he never seems to learn that Gibbs sees all.
5. Your sister can be your best friend... or your worst enemy... or both.
Lady Mary and Lady Edith are always fighting. There was the time when Edith wrote to the Turkish Ambassador about the Turk in Mary's bed... and the time when Mary spilled the beans about Edith's illegitimate daughter to the man she was going to marry. Those are just the highlights. But even though the two were always fighting, they fought just as fiercely for each other. Like when Edith brought Henry Talbot back. Or when Mary brought Bertie Pelham back.
6. Follow your heart.
"When Calls the Heart" is a Hallmark show that I absolutely fell in love with from the first episode. It follows the story of a young, rich city woman who decides to move to a town called Coal Valley to teach at the school there. She goes because she wants to be more useful, and over time she learns to be a contributing member of the town (something everyone doubted she could do). She followed her heart there, and it paid off.
7. Be yourself. Authenticity beats perfection.
If there is one word that describes Abby Schuto, it's "unique." Her way of dress, talking, even her habits, are all completely and totally her and only her. This is what makes her one of my favorite characters on "NCIS."
I've learned a lot from watching my favorite TV shows, and these are just a few things I thought of on the fly. What have you learned from your favorite TV shows? Let me know in the comments!
