What "Parks And Recreation" Has Taught Me

"Parks and Recreation" is one of my favorite shows of all time, brimming with clever jokes and valuable life lessons. Often praised as having one of the best comedy casts on television, every single character brings their own unique and hilarious perspectives to the show. We can learn something new from each person who appeared on this perfect show that ended too soon.

1. Leslie Knope – Strength

Leslie works incredibly hard all the time and is proof that determination pays off. She is a powerhouse on the show and a great role model for girls everywhere. Leslie sends the message that women can do anything men can do, and then outwork them and do it better.

She refuses to take “no” as an answer to anything and is well known throughout the office to get what she wants. Nothing can stand in Leslie Knope’s way on her journey to becoming the first female president of the United States. Do everything in life with the strength and willpower of Leslie Knope, and you will succeed.

2. Ron Swanson - Confidence

Ron’s unmatched confidence in himself is a trait we should always strive for. He knows exactly what kind of person he wants to be and what his purpose is in life. Despite his extreme political views and the paradox of working in the exact government he wants to destroy, Ron Swanson is the epitome of greatness.

Nothing can stop Ron from being true to himself. Even when he is thrown off track by Tammy 1, Tammy 2, or finding a vegetable loaf where a cake should have been, Ron always finds his way back on track.

He’s ready for anything. He’s Ron Swanson. Need I say more?

3. Andy Dwyer - Optimism

Andy Dwyer has an undying optimism in everything he does. He is a carefree, lovable guy who is just laughing his way through life.

If anyone needs a partner-in-crime to help out with a stupid plan, Andy will be by their side with full force. He may not be the smartest character on the show, but that does not stop him from having fun with mundane tasks or putting a smile on everyone’s faces. His character Johnny Karate made so many children happy, and no one will ever forget the powerful postmortem anthem he wrote for the city’s most beloved pony, Lil’ Sebastian, called “5,000 Candles in the Wind.” We should all strive to make the most out of every second just like Andy.

4. April Ludgate – Independence

April does not care what anyone thinks of her and always stays true to herself. She pursues her passions, primarily animals and is clear about what she dislikes, like talking to people, working and Ann Perkins.

April is a very intelligent woman who can get anything accomplished when she puts her mind to it. She follows her instincts and her quick wit is hard to match. When she knew she loved Andy, she wasted no time in getting to know him and marrying him. Every girl needs to find her Andy, but April is always strong and resourceful with or without her beloved partner.

5. Ben Wyatt – Embracing Your Inner Nerd

Every so often you just have to let out that nerd inside you. Ben gets so excited about the fandoms he is involved in and you are mistaken if you think you could beat him in "Game of Thrones" or "Star Trek" trivia.

Ben even created his own fantasy game called "Cones of Dunshire" in the course of a week. Embrace things in life that make you really excited, no matter how nerdy they are. The books, movies and television shows you love are part of your soul, and Ben shows us that nerds don’t have to fit the stereotypes. Everyone has a nerdy side, some just choose to accept it more and let it out.

6. Tom Haverford – Perseverance

Though Tom had many business ideas that did not come to fruition, he approached every one of them with high energy and commitment. From a baby tuxedo clothing line to Lasik surgery for fingernails, most of his inventions did not get past their catchy slogans. Some of his ideas, like Rent-A-Swag, Snakejuice, and Entertainment 720, were put into action but hit some snags along the way and were eventually shut down.

Did that deter Tom? Of course not! He kept pushing until he finally opened up a successful restaurant called “Tom’s Bistro.” Perseverance and tenacity are necessary qualities for people like Tom who go after what they want.

7. Ann Perkins – Friendship

Friendship is one of the most important lessons in the whole series. Being Leslie’s best friend who is always there for support, Ann represents what true friendship is really about. She is a calming force when Leslie goes overboard with stress and she gives Leslie great advice on her problems. It is refreshing to see a female friendship on television where the two girls aren’t constantly getting into arguments, other than that one infamous night with the Snake Juice.

Leslie relies heavily on Ann, and Ann handles it with grace and positivity. This is rather impressive considering the huge personality Leslie has that can be very difficult to contain at times, but Leslie returns the friendship with equally as much commitment and love.

I try to be half the friend Ann is to Leslie in my own relationships, and I think her character is often underrated or overlooked on the show.

8. Lil’ Sebastian – Perfection

Lil’ Sebastian is the level of perfection that every person and horse should strive to reach. He can do no wrong and is the heart and soul of Pawnee. His spirit will always live on and inspire us all to spread our wings and learn to fly.

If I have learned one thing in my lifetime, it is that friends are a privilege. No one is required to give you their company and yet there is some sort of shared connection that keeps you together. And from that friendship, you may even find yourself lucky enough to have a few more friends, thus forming a group. Here are just a few signs that prove your current friend group is the ultimate friend group.

When it comes to television, there’s very few sets of on-screen siblings that a lot of us can relate to. Only those who have grown up with siblings knows what it feels like to fight, prank, and love a sibling. Ross and Monica Geller were definitely overbearing and overshared some things through the series of "Friends," but they captured perfectly what real siblings feel in real life. Some of their antics were funny, some were a little weird but all of them are completely relatable to brothers and sisters everywhere.

Her sister was a member, her mom was a member, all of her aunts were members, and her grandma was a member. She has been waiting her whole life to wear these letters and cried hysterically on bid day. Although she can act entitled at times, you can bet she is one of the most enthusiastic sisters.

Every kid in college and/or high school dreams of summer the moment they walk through the door on the first day back in September. It becomes harder and harder to focus in classes and while doing assignments as the days get closer. The winter has been lagging, the days are short and dark, and no one is quite themselves due to lack of energy and sunlight. Let's face it: life is ten times better in the summertime.
