5 Lessons From 2000s Rom-Coms That Are Just As Relevant When Your '13 Going On 30' Or 29 Going On 30

As someone who self-identifies as a film buff and religiously watches Oscar-worthy dramas, 2000's rom-coms have been a major guilty pleasure of mine. Find me cuddled up under a blanket, with a pint of Halo Top ice cream in hand, watching "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" for the umpteenth time.

I mean, I couldn't help but swoon over the dreamy male leads, wishing to be swept away to a picturesque autumn date in New York City. The 2000s was the golden age for the classic boy-meets-girl movies. This specific genre of romantic comedies has its own tropes and cinematic style, with films often set in large urban landscapes and featuring a cute, upbeat soundtrack. Cue the Vanessa Carlton songs.

Of all the movies I have seen, I can say that there are quite a few things we can pick up from our favorite rom-coms. Below are five crucial takeaways from your favourite 2000s rom-coms.

It's OK to be a hot mess at times.

We all have those "hot mess" moments of waking up somewhere completely strange, yet making it on time for an 11 a.m. meeting or blanking out during an important conference.

It's OK to be a hot mess or even to not know what's going on at times. Laugh at your mistakes and bounce back.

You get what you put into your aspirations into.

Yay for ambitious career women! Every good 2000s rom-com features a leading lady who knows what she wants and works hard to achieve her goals — whether it be preparing for a presentation at work or testing out the waters at a new job.

Think "13 going 30" or "Confessions of a Shopaholic."

Romance finds itself in very unexpected places.

Romance finds itself in places you're least expecting, even if you're broke, in your 20s and single in a big city. Love itself is a strange thing, and sometimes you may have to wait it out.

Perhaps something will spark on a Friday night bar hop.

Run away and take a break.

When everything seems a little too much handle, it's OK to escape and take a break. Go outside and take a breather.

Break out of your comfort zone.

You never know what could happen if you don't take that chance.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
