Back in October, Nickelodeon launched The Splat, a programming block comprised of popular '90s television shows. For a majority of us, these shows were an important part of our childhood. Even more, these shows taught us many life lessons, and some stick with us more than others.
"Kenan and Kel" taught us that loyalty will go a long way when it comes to our friends. In almost every episode, we witness Kel being loyal to Kenan by supporting all of his crazy ideas. In other instances, Kenan was always a loyal friend to Kel, especially when trying to help him out of tough situations and making sure he gets his orange soda.
In "Rugrats," we learned that not all families are the same. "Rugrats" exposed us to a family who only had a single father, a family that showed a dominant woman and a submissive man, and it even showed us a blended family.
We learned that it is okay to experiment from "As Told By Ginger," especially when you are young. We watched this show and looked on as Ginger found herself in different situations where her identity was tested. She spent a majority of her time trying to figure out who she was, including her interests and dislikes.
While watching "The Wild Thornberrys," we learned to embrace adventure. The Thornberry family visited new locations and sought new adventures in each episode. This show taught children of our generation that there is more to the world that we have yet to see.
In "Hey Arnold" we learned not to be afraid to leave the stoop. Ultimately, this means that we have to be willing to step out of our comfort zone sometimes.
"Doug" showed us how to surround ourselves with a variety of people. Doug had several friends and acquaintances, all who were different colors. Some were blue, some were chartreuse, and some were purple. Even with different colors and personalities, everyone looked past that and seemed to get along well.
Nickelodeon has other popular '90s television shows, but these shows presented the most important life lessons to me. Being able to watch these shows as children shaped the '90s kids generation into who we are today. Time to turn on The Splat and reminisce!
