What's Your Story?

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." - Leo Buscaglia

For me, this past weekend was filled with events for the American Cancer Society. From collecting money for ACS, to participating in a wonderful luncheon for Caregivers by my friend, Megan Forby. It was during this event that made me realize why I do what I do.

In college, extracurriculars are not a requirement. So when people choose to join a club, it speaks volumes about what organization they chose, why they chose it, and how much effort they put in. Besides Kappa, my two biggest commitments (to me, outside of school), is Colleges Against Cancer and the Crisis Text Line.

So why did I choose Colleges Against Cancer? Not only do I do it to make my impact on finding a cure for cancer, but I do it for the cancer patients, the survivors, and the caregivers. I do it for the stories I get to hear about their fight, and wins, over cancer.

I do it to hear about their story, their journey that brought them here with me, walking at Relay for Life. Why? Because their story matters, and I’m lucky enough to be a part of it, the least I can do is contribute.

So that’s part one of two of my “biggest commitments”. So why Crisis Text Line? Mental health has been, and will always be, one of those topics that I advocate for with all my heart. I have had first and second hand experience with mental illness.

I know what its like, and I have seen where it can bring you. I want to be there for the people who feel like they have no one else. Who feel like their world is closing in on them. Who needs a listening ear. That’s why I volunteer with CTL, to be the ear, the voice, and the hope for those who feel like they lost it all, or want their story to be heard.

This is me, in a nut shell. I pull from my past experiences, and fight to make a difference in what I believe in. I chose organizations that I am passionate about so that I can give it my 110%.

Someone once told me you can learn a lot about a person if you listen to their story, so what’s your story? What made you decide to join the clubs/organizations that you are a part of?

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
