Life is not Random, And You Are Okay Right Where You Are

Gratitude will bring you far.

Life is not Random, And You Are Okay Right Where You Are

My ideal perfect day consists of me with a book, or a journal in my hands, sitting outside enjoying the breeze rushing through my hair. I would exist in a mere moment with words running through my mind or onto a page.

I wouldn't feel the need to be anywhere, but, just to be and to be with the ones closest to me. I would be content in the here and now.

Honestly, every day is not like this. Sometimes I question why and when I will reach the ideal day where I won't have a million things to do or to worry about.

Well, worry is not our friend. It creates a huge amount of uncertainty in your life when there doesn't need to be.

I often notice people questioning the things they are going through or the things that have happened to them. I am guilty of this. I overlook doing this as if it is normal to get upset because my day didn't go as planned or that something didn't work out.

We struggle so much in the moments because they are not what we expected or what we desire at all.

For me it's easy to question, to fuss, to allow it to affect me so deeply that I start to believe that life is meant to be unsatisfying.

But it's not, life is meant to be satisfying.

"We don't have a promise that our stories will turn out the way we'd like them to." - Kim Hyland.

While it might feel unsatisfying and confusing at times, I know that not every day will be perfect and not everything we go through is ideal. Life is not random, and everything here and now matters.

We are constantly changing to adjust to the challenges and new circumstances life presents. I have to stop myself from letting one thing ruin the rest of my week because how can I truly embrace the gift of each day if I am questioning where I am right now?

I can't, but that is a choice that we all have. Where we are right now is where we are meant to be. Even if it is not what we want or what we believe should be, there is a reason. Even when you try your best and see no results, there is a reason. You will break through because if growth was easy, we would not appreciate it.

Your life is yours. My life is mine, there are so many more adventures to be had and more exciting places see and experiences to hear about.

Practice gratitude in your day. Recently, I started to make gratitude lists each morning consisting of five things I am grateful for. For a moment, it allows me to stop and think and appreciate everything I am going through and everything I do have.

This is how I start my day and how I choose to see the good in everything I am going through.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
