There are over 200 million licensed drivers in the United States. Most of us drive our cars at least once a day, whether we are going to work, taking a road trip, or just making a quick run to CVS, and there are plenty of distractions out there including drivers with serious road rage, soccer moms in a rush, and those annoying new drivers who insist on being extra cautious. So let’s be honest, road signs aren’t exactly our primary focus; we often use them as mere guidelines for how to conduct ourselves on the road. We all know what several common signs really mean.
Stop Sign
This one is probably the trickiest of them all. It’s hard to tell whether it’s in the name of love or if it’s hammer time. When in doubt, most of us slow down only enough to avoid an accident and make sure there are no cops lurking on the side of the road.
Yellow Light
That little yellow light brings out the Mario Andretti in all of us. You have a limited amount of time and you better speed up to make it through the intersection before the light turns red! Vroom vroom!
Speed Limit
These “limits” essentially provide you with a minimum speed that you can drive without pissing others off. Please, whatever you do, do not go below this number. Ideally, take whatever the limit is and cruise at about 12mph above it.
No U-Turn
It’s almost a given that when you need to turn around because you have just missed your exit, you are faced with one of these signs mocking your mistake. It’s only natural that in your moment of stress, you are going to make that illegal U-turn because this is a go big or go home moment.
Pedestrians crossing
Have you ever played that game where you see people crossing the street, you assign them a number of points, and the driver gets that many if they hit them? No? Just me? Well, this is a signal telling you that you should get ready and on the lookout because it’s game time. (Extra points for people with shopping carts or crazy outfits!)
So buckle up, and good luck everybody!
