Growing Up In A Small Town

“I live in a town that everyone claims to hate, but never seems to leave” -Unknown

It can be hard living in a small town sometimes. Everyone knows who you are and if you think you are keeping a secret chances are already half the town knows. Even though it can be challenging I could never imagine growing up anywhere else. This small town will always be my home.

Being a part of a small town also means being a part of a small school district. I’ve been apart of this school district since I was five years old. When you are around the same people for your whole life a lot of them become more of a family. This is the best way to explain my school and we even had a motto “one family”. I still talk to a lot of the people I graduated with today and for that I will be forever grateful. This is just one perk of living in a small town; being apart of one family.

Continuing on about school, I also got the pleasure of having small class sizes. My teachers had the chance of getting to know me on a one on one level and that is something big schools do not get to do. All of my teachers knew my name and I wasn't just a number to them. My teachers also impacted my life so much they were more than just teachers to me; I knew I could go to them about anything. They also played a big part in the community. They showed their support for our town by coming to events and helping out with school spirit. Having teachers that participate in the community is another reason why I love living in a small town, it shows that they truly care about us students. I can’t imagine living anywhere else then this town. I can’t imagine growing up with different people and making different friendships. I am so grateful for every person in this community; we are all amazing people.

My town is a place where everybody swears they’re going to leave as soon as we graduate but always find their way back. When we find our way back there is always someone here for us. That is the biggest part about living in a small town that I love; we will always have someone to be there for us. I will always be proud of where I came from and I am thankful for this community that I get to call family.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
