Life Is A Giant Risk

How do you decide what risks to take?

Life is one big giant risk. There isn't a single thing that doesn't involve at least some percentage of risk. Most risks people take are calculated and thoroughly thought out. Other times risk is spontaneous and more...risky. But if people didn't put themselves at risk they wouldn't be alive to begin with, and I don't just mean they wouldn't be enjoying life. When I child is conceived and born that is a risk.

What do you do when you think of a risk? Do you consider the harm it will do to you? Do you imagine the what ifs? Do you think about what others would think about your choices? What is your thought process as you assess a risk?

Do you ask yourself: What would Dory do?

Dory would probably do something crazy like jumping into a situation that seems impossible. The impossible stays that way until it is attempted successfully, becoming possible. Does it help to think about what someone else would do? Is it someone who inspires you to take risks or take the safer route?

Do you go back and forth between the beauty and the scariness?

Rapunzel leaves her tower for a dream, but fights with herself about whether to continue. Experiencing something new is exciting and terrifying simultaneously. Does it take someone to encourage you along the path of excitement? Or does it take someone encouraging you into playing things safe? There is nothing wrong with examining the good and bad of every risk, but what pushes you in one direction over the other? Whatever it is, make sure you are okay with what steers the direction of your life.

Do you do it for someone else, for love?

Aladdin made requests from the genie in order to win over the princess. He released the genie because he loved him. People do some crazy things for love. Risks seem much smaller when it is for someone else, and the risk of loosing that person feels greater than any other risk. Movies and books show that anything is possible with love. Perhaps that is wishful thinking or maybe it is based on real life. But either way the risks of life seem less with love and wishful thinking.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
