Finding a true "Grey's Anatomy" fan who is up to date is sometimes hard to find, so if you aren't one of those people, warning there are spoilers in this post.
I think one of the most amazing scenes in television history aired on a Thursday night a few weeks ago, and it was insanely slept on. If you are up to date, you know April Kepner has lost her marbles and she is no longer the April we know and love.
April snapped, like we all probably do once or twice in life. That was hard to watch, especially with the news that she will be leaving the show. Then, the wake-up call we had been waiting for happened. I think we can all take something away from it.
I'll link the video below for you to watch because I want everyone to see it.
Essentially a Rabbi rips April a new one, tells her she is acting like a child and I was stumped because I think a lot of times we are a lot like her, or at least I am.
First, the Rabbi whips out real Bible stories to prove his point, that life is not fair. The fact that this is on a secular TV show is so cool!!!
He tells her, nowhere in any religion is it promised that everything will be perfect, or give you a guarantee that life will not come with bumps in the road. If only that could hit us on the head once a week.
He tells April, who are you to get to know? Who are you to point fingers and say that God is doing things wrong?
WOW. It is not our place. God is very good at being God if you let him. He knows what he is doing.
I think what floored me the most is when then Rabbi tells her, faith wouldn’t be real faith if you only believe it when things are good. Things will go bad, things will be scary. If you don't believe in God, through all of it, then what are you even doing? It's easy to believe in something when things are good. Anyone can do that.
An example that comes to mind is an infant and their parent. Babies cry, babies do not like it when they get shots or have to take a bath, but the parent knows what is best. The parent knows the baby needs vaccinations or decent hygiene.
If you don't understand my metaphor, essentially we are the babies. We are the ones who do not know why things are good for us. You have to have faith that God means well, that God has a plan, that he is not shocked by anything life throws our way.
The Rabbi reminds her, God is not indifferent to our pain.
He is not surprised by it, he knows that it is happening. He knows that it hurts. He knows that because this world is so full of sin, this world is not easy.
I think to put it in perspective, we can pray and tell God about the things on our hearts, and we should, BUT none of it is a surprise to him.
God never thinks, "Oh no, that's not what I had planned! How did this happen?"
Sure, we sin and that's not really what he wants for us, but he knows the world we live in. He knows we will never reach perfection. God does know what he is doing. He knows, even when we don't.
So maybe this doesn't make sense, and it's more just my thoughts on a page, but watch the video. I think it's all very true. When life feels like season 14 April Kepner, hold on, friend, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.
