My Life As A Communications Major

The perfect fit for me.

My Life As A Communications Major
DegreesFocus.com

I went into my freshman year of college knowing I wanted to major somewhere in the Communications Department. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, which is why I chose a major with such a wide variety of options for careers. After taking one year of classes, I loved them all and decided to specialize in Public Relations and Journalism.

Life as a Communications major is much different from the lives of students with other majors. I’ve always been used to having to study, memorize, and take tests over things that I probably forgot the day after. That’s one of the many things I love about being a Communications major. I don’t have to memorize statistics, take tests every week over my knowledge of vocabulary words, or do worksheet after worksheet of homework. Some people consider my major the “easy” major because I don’t have to do these things, but what they don’t understand is what we actually do. I spend my time writing paper after paper and doing projects that relate to real life situations.

I have had people tell me that’s the reason why I chose that major. They think I chose my major because it’s the “easiest.” For all you communications majors, you know what I’m talking about. I didn’t choose my major because I thought it would be easy. I chose my major for the same reason everyone else chooses theirs -- because I love it. I love building relationships and strengthening my communication skills through classes and projects. I love the endless opportunities for careers that I will have after I graduate. I simply love everything about it.

I’m not going to lie to myself or anyone else, though. No, I don’t like taking tests and no, I don’t like staying up all night studying and memorizing things that I will probably forget the minute I hand my test in. I’ve never been a really good test taker and I’ve always hated memorizing things, so communications is perfect for me. I enjoy writing and doing projects that challenge me to go out into the real world for different situations that I will face when I’m on my own.

The best part about communications is that I will never be bored. Especially with public relations. Our job is to plan. We work on planning for things that could happen, not usually anything that has happened. I like the fact that I have to challenge my creativity. From planning big events to reacting and responding to a high-pressure situation, I’ll always be forced to problem solve and think creatively.

So, for all those people out there that think I chose the “easy” major, I didn’t. I chose the major that best fits with my personality and interests. I chose the major that will give me the most opportunities after I graduate and the major that always keeps me constantly problem solving. I love my major, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in a couple of years when I’m graduated.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
