Lately, all I hear is how bad millennials are. It seems to be coming more often than not from the older generation, who don't really see teenagers as contributors to society, however, that is far from true, especially if you keep an open mind.
Teenagers, (millennials) are often being labeled as lazy, obsessed with technology, misinformed, inadequate, non-contributing, and disappointing. These are just to name a few. These labels get put on young adults, because of a stereotype that teenagers are unable to do what others have done; what does not happen is where adults form an opinion of an individual so that it is true.
Most teenagers have more than enough ability to do almost anything they are asked to do or just personally want to do, but lack the encouragement from the older generations. Those generations spend their time digging on millennials instead of building them up and truly enhancing the potential of teenagers they have come in contact with.
It is honestly so detrimental to our mental capacity when we hear those negative labels being thrown at us on a daily basis. We begin to question our own abilities, talents, and purpose. We then start to put our positive energy into random things, things that won't make a difference, we start to waste our potential, all because of the lack of encouragement.
It is not only the face to face labeling that has an impact on a millennials life, it is largely related to media. That is where millennials spend a lot of their time is on the internet. As they scroll through feeds and posts, they come across something that happened because of one individual, but the person posting about it has made it about the generation as a whole; I have seen it done countless of times myself. It makes an impression on the person reading it, any post does.
Millennials have a tough time in their current situation, but it is not 100% their fault, societal standards have made a huge impact in their development and their image. However all this stereotypical behavior can be changed with one simple task- older generations start to build us up, show us the way, teach us how to do things that can make a difference.
Start giving millennials a chance, create opportunities where they can use their skills and develop their own purpose. If older generations would be more willing to pass down knowledge, stories, experiences, and more- it would make all the difference in the world not only to an individual, not only to millennials as a whole but to society across the board.
