Life As A Biology Major As Told By "Friends"

So no one told you life was going to be this way. Or maybe they did or you've heard what your life will consist of as a biology major. Biology is a great major. It has so many career opportunities, but it is not easy. Three hour labs, countless reports and presentations, impossible exams, never ending material, etc. The life of a bio major is a hard one. Whether you're a current bio major, already earned your degree in bio or have an interest in it, this article is for you! Here is the life of a bio major as told by the cast of "Friends":

1. When Lab Gets Out Early.

Labs take a good chunk of your day out. Each lab is at least three hours long and you work from start to finish. Some labs are fun, but others are equal to death. It's like a Christmas gift when your lab professor lets you out early.

2. Reading Your Textbook and Scientific Journals.

Are these words even English? Cyanobacterium, Dendrochronology, Eutrophication, etc. If you are a non-science major, than you probably did not even know that these words exist. Your textbook and scientific journals might as well be in another language because you can't understand them even when they are in English.

3. When Your Friends In Other Majors Complain.

Now, I'm not saying that other majors are not challenging, but when your friend is complaining that they have a single test when you have a lab report, test on four chapters and online assignments to do, it does get a little annoying.

4. When You Study All Night and Still Fail Your Exam.

This is the worst feeling ever. Especially when your whole grade is riding on this one test score. Medical school will still accept you if you fail one exam right? It's even worse when the whole class fails and the professor does not curve it.

5. Organic Chemistry.

Enough said. Organic Chemistry: the one course every biology dreads to take.

6. Receiving Your Biology Degree.

This is the moment you have been waiting for since your first day of freshman year. All the lab hours, school work, tears and everything else has finally paid off. Now your future has no limits. Whether you want to go to medical school or work in a lab, you can do anything you set your mind to.

Biology is a hard but rewarding major. We complain about it more often than not, but we would not change it for the world. If we didn't love bio, than none of us would be bio majors. Biology is one of the best majors there is offered and I would not give it up for anything. Especially chemistry. Remember: Keep Calm and Love Biology.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
