To the arts majors of the world--we all get the "what are you going to do with that?" question from parents, grandparents, siblings, family, and friends. As we all know, each one of us is going to take similar courses in our programs, but we all will go and do something completely different with our degrees. We each have different perspectives from each class--certain classes can totally speak to us and set of a lightbulb of what we want to do for a career. Or for some people, like myself, we want a career that has nothing to do with the arts, but want to work with artists.
Let me go off on a little personal tangent. I am a dance major--and I don't regret my decision what-so-ever. I knew coming into my career as a dance major that I wanted to be a physical therapist. However, my ultimate goal is to work in a college dance program or professional dance company helping injured dancers get back to doing what he/she loves. I've been down that road, I've been there, I know what it's like. I have a personal connection to my career path, but to me it was important to experience college as a dancer and get the knowledge of how the dancer's body works, versus the average human.
If you ask ten arts majors what they want to be when they grow up, you'll get a unique answer from each and every one of us. And that's the best part of being an arts major--the possibilities for a career are endless. While we might not be making six figures like our peers in medical or engineering fields, we all love what we do. And you know what they say about loving your career.
