We all have our preferences
When it comes to reading sentences
They come in different sizes
And vary in prices
A wide range of styles
That can stretch for miles
They come in trilogies
And can expand into a series
The look of the glossy jacket
Which makes a protective blanket
A couplet is a literary device that contains two successive rhyming schemes that make up a verse and have the same meter in order to form a complete thought. Couplets can be a poem on their own or can be a part of a larger poem, like a Shakespearean sonnet. Couplets can come in many forms, short, heroic (open and close), Shakespearean, and many other formats.
A couplet that can stand alone, be independent, and be a poem in and of itself is called a closed couplet but a couplet that doesn't have a meaning on its own is called an open couplet. Couplets are normally found at the end of Shakespearean sonnets, thus concluding the sonnet and stating the theme. The couplet is used to give the poem a more interesting and rhythmic tone. Couplets were used by the likes of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Frost, thus leading to the famous use of the literary device.
