William T. Young Library - levels of study rooms, desks, computers, and shelves upon shelves of books, from historically preserved ones to recently published. The library sits like a giant on a hill at the University of Kentucky, yet its arms are gentle rather than intimidating. In navigating the world of college, it can sometimes be difficult to find your place.
On a campus with hundreds of other students and dozens of organizations, the niches are endless. All around us are study groups and close friends, intense focus typing away on a laptop, lines bending around the Starbucks waiting to order, and whiteboards covered in biology and chemistry. Lovably referred to as "Willy T," the library acts as a home to college students living far away from their real homes and has created bonds that have turned into some of my best friends - many from different Greek organizations than me - in and out of its walls.
The library can make you more productive
This library is a place that elicits productivity, motivating students to get their work done and study hard.
You make friendships that transcend divisions
In the library, it doesn't matter what organization you are a part of, or what your major is. When meeting to work on projects, there is no place like the library for being a place to form bonds.
It can be used for more than just a place to meet
Last but not least, the library holds places to sustain yourself with coffee and food, and the people working the desks are always more than happy to assist you in finding the resources you need.
The warmth of Starbucks drinks is perfect for the cold weather
Starbucks drinks are a warm source of caffeine when working on yet another paper in the Starbucks at Willy T. In each season, but especially winter, the warmth of the place is a comfort for students walking across campus in the cold.
Memories are made at 1 a.m. during finals week
Being in the library during dead week, midterms, or finals is an experience to say the least. Everyone is stressed, running on very little sleep and a little too much caffeine, but its then that some of your funniest memories in college are made.
Just like sleeping in your own bed, you can sleep at the library too!
It may not come with a duvet and pillows, but the library does hold a multitude of spots to take a quick nap while studying.
Being a homebody - at the library
If you don't feel like going anywhere during the day or at night, but still have a lot of work to get done, try staying in - at the library!
The library is welcoming - just like your own home
William T Young sits like a giant on a hill at the University of Kentucky, yet its arms are gentle rather than intimidating. In Willy T, the atmosphere is comfortable, and so it feels like a home.
You can have gatherings of friends
A library is so much more than just a place to study or get a coffee. In your own home, you invite friends over to meet and hang out!
Across campus, it can be hard to find your home
It can be difficult to find a home in college, with so many organizations and groups, and so many spaces to congregate. The library is home to so much more than books- it is home to classes and study groups, strangers and friends, tech people and grad students.
