Libraries are great. They are really great. They are so great, people don't realize how essentially great they are! (Hey, if our new President can get away with speaking like that, so can I.) How “great” are our libraries for real?
Going to the library, you can pick up a book or two. You can even carry a few books and after your 3 week time span with them is over, you either return your book to the library or extend the time before you check the books back in. Depends on your preferences.
Libraries offer more than that though. If you pay attention to their flyers you will notice that the libraries hold a plethora of events throughout the year. These include but are not limited to; evening classes for adults, activities for children, book clubs for senior citizens, open mic nights, book signings, and various other activities.
Some of the classes libraries offer are as follows; English as a Second Language (A really popular one where I am currently living.), Introduction to Photoshop and Intermediate Photoshop course, Writing Workshops, Make Your Own Soda Bread, Make a Gingerbread House, Defensive Driving Courses, Resume Building Workshops and more.
Other programs libraries can offer is open mic nights, craft fairs with local artist associations, book launches, having a singer(s) perform there and more than that as well.
On the bulletin boards are upcoming local events. There are also charities listed and sometimes even events in the city that the library will sometimes host these trips. Pamphlets for future home owners, business owners, and even alcohol and substance survivors will be placed here. Again, the last part depends on which community you are a part of. If they don't have a bulletin board then they should have a newsletter, you just have to keep your eyes open.
It never hurts to get involved with your local community. You may find it fun, rewarding, and a life changer. You could meet new people and sometimes you may just land an even better job. At the very least, you will get your name out there in your local community. Always offer to be of assistance and pay attention to what your library has to offer.
